Abstract:
The Learning Health System offers the promise for improved quality and value in healthcare by recovering wasted opportunities resulting from inefficient transitions from scientific discovery to clinical evidence generation and finally to real-world patient care. However, to truly realize this vision, health systems will then have to rapidly generate new discovery as a byproduct of routine patient care, thereby closing the virtuous cycle of continuous learning. This process requires a new class of embedded clinician-scientists, who are as familiar with data science as they are with delivery science, to oversee a robust sociotechnical platform for implementation and learning. I will review select examples of inpatient embedded research and discuss the need for future approaches to achieve sustainable continuous learning.
