Dr. John Brush graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1976 and earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1980. He trained in internal medicine at the University of Vermont School of Medicine and in cardiology at Yale University School of Medicine. From 1985 to 1988, he was a Senior Investigator and staff cardiologist with the Cardiology Branch of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. From 1988 to 1992, he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Since 1992, he has practiced cardiology in Norfolk, Virginia and in 2012 his group became Sentara Cardiology Specialists. He is a Professor of Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. In addition to a busy clinical practice, he has maintained an interest in cardiovascular outcomes research and has led quality improvement initiatives at the local, state and national level. In 2013, he authored an iBook on medical reasoning entitled “The Science of the Art of Medicine.”
Dr. Brush is actively involved with the American College of Cardiology. He has served on many ACC committees and from 2005 to 2008 he chaired the College’s Quality Strategic Directions Committee. During that time he helped organize the College nationwide quality improvement initiative, D2B: An Alliance for Quality. This initiative engaged over 1000 hospitals nationwide to improve the timeliness of care for patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction. He was a member of the Steering Committee for the D2B Initiative and now serves on the Steering Committee for the ACC/IHI Hospital-to-Home Initiative, which is dedicated to reducing the hospital readmission rates for patients with heart disease. From 2006 to 2009, Dr. Brush was president of the Virginia ACC Chapter and served on the ACC Board of Governors. He now serves as a member of the ACC Board of Trustees.
