Presenter: Mickey Trockel, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Stanford University

Note: This event will be held in LK130

Dr. Mickey Trockel is a board certified psychiatrist and specializes in cognitive and behavioral strategies for treatment of clinical problems such as anxiety, insomnia, and depression.

Dr. Trockel is on the clinical faculty at Stanford University where, in addition to his clinical work, he teaches medical students, trains other mental health professionals, and conducts research. He regularly publishes in peer reviewed medical and psychology journals.

Dr. Trockel’s early report showing the relationship between sleep habits and academic performance of university students has been cited over 200 times. One of his subsequent publications reported the effectiveness of an e-mail delivered self-help sleep improvement program he and his colleagues developed at Stanford, based on cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) strategies. Some of Dr. Trockel’s recent publications focus on the effectiveness of CBT-I, based on analysis of data gathered from patients treated by therapists participating in the largest CBT-I training program in the United States.

Prior to psychiatry residency and post-doc research training, which he completed at Stanford University, Dr. Trockel received his M.D. degree from the University of Illinois, where he also earned his Ph.D. in Community Health, with an emphasis in health behavior and health education.

Lawrence H. Kushi, ScD, is the Director of Scientific Policy at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research. Dr. Kushi will be presenting his work with the Virtual Data Warehouse.  Kaiser Permanente Northern California is one of the oldest and largest integrated health care systems in the United States, providing care to approximately a third of the population in the counties in which it has a physical presence.  A pioneer in use of electronic medical records, comprehensive databases capture near-complete documentation of clinical activity associated with most clinical encounters.  In partnership with the members of the Health Care Systems Research Network, Kaiser has implemented the Virtual Data Warehouse common data model to facilitate collaborative research. These data have been leveraged for research across the cancer care spectrum, from etiologic studies of cancer risk, through screening, treatment, and outcomes.  These data provide an unparalleled opportunity for research use of real-world clinical and administrative data.
