Presenter: Dr. Umar Mahmood, MD

Vice Chair for Precision Imaging in the Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Mahmood’s research has focused on translational applications of molecular imaging to guide precision medicine, with an emphasis on the tumor microenvironment, cancer signaling pathways, changes in cancer metabolism, and the interaction of the immune system with tumors. He is interested in applying image information for disease characterization and optimization of individual treatment response. In addition to his work at MGH, he is Chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the NIH Clinical Center. He serves on the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees of RSNA, and serves on the Board of Directors and as Chair of the Scientific Program Committee of SNMMI.

ABSTRACT: Historically, many of the gains in medicine have been achieved by uniformly applying medical insights to large groups of patients. A combination of increasing biological understanding of the heterogeneity of disease processes and the concurrent expansion of available selective therapeutic interventions has provided the opportunity to improve group outcomes by optimizing treatment on an individual basis. In many cases, molecular imaging is ideally suited to serve as a biomarker to guide therapy selection and dosing, and to provide an early assessment of efficacy. This presentation highlights by example several areas in which imaging helps determine target engagement, dynamic cellular response to treatment, and the effectiveness of immune modulation in oncologic treatment.

The Pivot to Virtual Care: Keeping the Momentum Post COVID-19

Over the past few months, the spread of COVID-19 has created a reality unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. While the pandemic has negatively influenced our lives in many aspects, the rising popularity of telemedicine has enabled faster diagnosis, increased efficiency, and reduced patient stress. Innovative communication technologies and the ubiquity of smart devices have made it possible for patients to more effectively connect with providers to receive care from the comfort of their own homes. In order to more fully examine the intersection of telemedicine and COVID-19, we’ve invited a panel of industry leaders to reflect on the transition to virtualized care, the staying power of telemedicine, and the “new normal” facing both patients and providers.

The webinar will be moderated by Mintu Turakhia, MD MAS, Executive Director of the Stanford Center for Digital Health. The speaker panel includes:

The mission of the Stanford Center for Clinical Research (SCCR) includes offering educational resources, training, and support for investigators and research staff.  We have invited the Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Dr. Philip Grant, MD, to provide you with an overview of the vaccines development and vaccine hesitancy for infectious diseases.

At the conclusion of this class, you will be able to:

  • Describe the history of vaccines development
  • Recognize the side effects of vaccines
  • Explain the history of vaccines hesitancy
  • Understand COVID-19 vaccines
  • Discuss vaccine hesitancy and COVID-19
  • Identify approaches to overcome vaccine hesitancy

Attendance is open to all research staff.

About the Instructor:

Dr. Philip Grant, MD, is a clinical researcher and Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases. He is Director of the HIV Clinic at Stanford and has a long-standing research interest in optimizing antiretroviral therapy, HIV drug resistance, and minimizing toxicity for HIV and its therapy. He also is investigating the immune response to influenza and the management of chronic viral conditions in the developing world. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Grant has directed interventional clinical trials in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, COVID-19 vaccine studies, and a study looking at the long term health of patients previously infected with COVID-19.
