Abstract:

Electronic health records have now saturated U.S. health systems, however with them, have come challenges of increased workflow, documentation, and alert burdens for clinicians.  Clinicians efforts have been reflected in editorials in peer reviewed and popular press, but less attention has focused on the change in patient experience and how patients engage in their healthcare utilizing EHR-associated patient portals or stand-alone solutions. In particular, it is unclear how clinician workload and population-based health can be effectively addressed with these tools.  Most studies of web, mobile or SMS-based tools have been limited by scale and few have been deployed widely. On the other hand, EHR-vendor patient portals often lack customizability, support and perhaps the business drivers necessary for robust solutions.  Apple has developed a software development kit to help address this gap but remains in early stages so far. This talk will highlight some of these issues and focus on related local work.
