Essentials of Clinical Research Course

This 10-session course introduces the basics of clinical research design, including: biostatistics, design of diagnostic and predictive test studies, required/desired elements of clinical trial protocols, the regulatory aspects of clinical research conduct and oversight, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and ethical dimensions of clinical research.

Open to faculty, trainees, students and staff.  A certificate of completion is offered to those who attend a minimum of 8 sessions and complete the required evaluations. 

Virtual classes will be held on Thursdays from 4:00 – 6:00 pm PT starting January 11 through March 14, 2024

The mission of the Stanford Center for Clinical Research (SCCR) includes offering educational resources, training, and support for investigators and research staff.  We have invited the speakers, Katherine J. Connors, MPH, Andrea Karina Bolanos, MPH, from the Stanford Medicine Research Participant Engagement Program (RPEP), to provide you with the resources and tools to engage participants as partners in research, within Stanford and beyond. Participant recruitment is one of the greatest challenges to successful clinical research.

By attending this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Learn about innovative participant engagement strategies available for your study
  • Consider ways to foster a research culture that is participant-centric and participant-empowered
  • Learn and discuss ways to disseminate results to study participants

Speakers:
Katherine Connors, MPH, Associate Director
Katherine has worked in clinical research at Stanford since 2010 and has a background in public health. She leads the Research Participant Engagement Program which aims to engage participants as partners in research, via outreach within Stanford and beyond. Katherine is passionate about increasing awareness of the importance of research participation and leveraging shared expertise to engage diverse patient populations and communities in research.

Andrea Bolanos, MPH, Program Coordinator
Andrea is a bilingual program coordinator and has a background in public health, specifically community public health practice. She works alongside Katherine, focusing on participant engagement consultations, honest broker outreach, research registry, Spanish translations, and community outreach. Andrea is passionate about engaging underrepresented and diverse populations in research.

The mission of the Stanford Center for Clinical Research (SCCR) includes offering educational resources, training, and support for investigators and research staff.  We have invited the Senior Research Scientist in the Division of Pain Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Kenneth Weber, PhD, to provide you with a summary of spinal conditions, including a discussion of their societal impact, the relevant spinal anatomy and pathology, and their clinical management. Spinal conditions are a leading cause of disability and pain globally. The complexity of the anatomy, mechanics, and pathology of the spine can make the management of spinal conditions quite challenging. The speaker will also review recent research aimed at providing improved diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive information for spinal conditions through advances in quantitative MRI.

At the conclusion of this class, you will be able to:

About the Presenter:
Dr. Kenneth Weber, PhD, is a Senior Research Scientist in the Division of Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Weber is trained clinically as a chiropractor and completed a PhD in neuroscience at Northwestern University. His NIH-funded research seeks to make MRI more quantitative by developing MRI-based markers that better track sensory and motor function in people with spinal conditions using machine-learning and advanced multimodal brain, spinal cord, and musculoskeletal MRI techniques.

Kiera Davis, MSCR, RN, BSN, is the Clinical Associate Director for Education and Training in the Stanford Center for Clinical Research. Kiera is also the Program Lead of the Program Management Office (PMO) which provides oversight of research at SHC Tri-Valley. She has worked at Stanford for 9 years after transitioning from clinical nursing as a pediatric cardiac intensive care nurse. She has over 12 years of research experience and is currently working to improve education and training for clinical research staff and protocol directors across the School of Medicine.

The speaker will delve into pathogenesis and renal pathology and equip one with knowledge to effectively treat and manage lupus nephritis.

Fahmeedah Kamal, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology. She is part of the Glomerular Disease Center at Stanford and has a busy outpatient and inpatient clinical practice.  She participates as a Stanford PI and Co-PI on multiple clinical trials related to Membranous Nephropathy, IgA Nephropathy and Lupus Nephritis. She is also the Director of Quality and Wellness for the Division. She is passionate about teaching and is the Associate Program Director for the Nephrology Fellowship.

We have invited Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at Stanford School of Medicine, Ade Odunaiya, MD, to provide an overview of chronic and end stage kidney disease, discuss kidney transplant as the treatment of choice for kidney failure, and discuss post-kidney transplant and chronic immunosuppression management.

At the conclusion of this class, you will be able to:

  • Understand the burden and causes of kidney disease
  • Discuss the history of kidney transplant and immunosuppression and the kidney allocation system in the US
  • Understand kidney transplant eligibility and outcomes
  • Recognize infectious complications post-transplant and techniques to mitigate
  • Identify metabolic complications post-transplant and management 

Attendance is open to all research staff in the Stanford School of Medicine

About the Instructor:

Ade Odunaiya, MD, MS is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology, at Stanford University, where she functions within a multidisciplinary team to manage kidney transplant recipients and individuals with impaired kidney function undergoing kidney, liver, and heart transplantation. She completed medical school at the University of Colorado and went to the University of Chicago for her Internal Medicine Residency, and to Stanford University for her General and Transplant Nephrology fellowships. During her training years at Stanford, she completed a Master of Science Degree in Epidemiology, and her thesis resulted in a peer reviewed publication.  She has since authored other peer reviewed articles and book chapters on kidney disease and kidney transplantation. She is the Program Director of the Stanford Kidney Transplant Fellowship Program and serves on several national committees related to education and diversity, equity and inclusion including the American Society of Nephrology and the Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Training Accreditation Program.

She is the educational co-chair for the Nephrology Section of the National Medical Association. She has served as a site principal investigator for a multicenter clinical trial and is broadly interested in improving clinical outcomes in kidney transplant recipients. She is also the program director of the kidney transplant fellowship program at Stanford University where she oversees 1-2 fellows per academic year to ensure they receive training to be competent kidney transplant physicians. In the past year, she has developed an educational curriculum for the fellows and has monthly meetings with the fellows to deliver/receive feedback and to ensure they are on track towards required competencies for graduation.
