Medicine Grand Rounds - Blood Pressure Targets in Limbo: How Low Can You Go? @ Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge, Berg Hall, 2nd Floor | Stanford | California | United States

Presenter: Tara Chang, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine (Nephrology)
Stanford University

Tara Chang is an assistant professor at Stanford University. She received her medical degree from the University of Michigan, and completed her residency at UCSF.

As a board-certified nephrologist, Chang sees first-hand the pervasiveness of cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). As a trained epidemiologist and clinical researcher, she also sees the lack of evidence available to guide treatment decision-making in CKD. Motivated by these evidence gaps, her research seeks to clarify questions about cardiovascular care in patients with CKD. Her research specifically focuses on issues such as blood pressure control, coronary revascularization, and the comparative effectiveness of cardioprotective medications in patients with CKD, with the long-term goal of improving outcomes in these high-risk patients.

Presenter: Christine Seidman, MD,
Professor,  Department of Medicine and Genetics
Harvard Medical School and Brigham Women’s Hospital

Christine Seidman is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Genetics at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In 2005 she was named the Thomas W. Smith Professor of Medicine. She is also an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She was an undergraduate at Harvard College and received a M.D. from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1978. Dr. Seidman served as an intern and resident in Internal Medicine at John Hopkins Hospital and received subspecialty training in cardiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She joined the staff at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1987 and is currently the Director of the Cardiovascular Genetics Center.

Seidman defines genetic causes of human cardiovascular diseases and explores how genetic variation in the general population influences cardiovascular health. She uses model systems to identify pathways affected by gene mutations and strategies to limit their deleterious effects. By translating these insights into clinical care, Seidman hopes to improve diagnostic precision and the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.
