The mission of the Stanford Center for Clinical Research (SCCR) includes offering educational resources, training, and support for investigators and research staff.  We have invited Dr. Lisa Goldman Rosas, PhD, MPH, Dr. Patricia Rodriguez Espinosa, PhD, MPH, and Katherine Connors, MPH, to jointly provide you with an overview of the basics of community engagement in clinical research including the goals, benefits and challenges of community engagement as well as how to get started building a community engagement plan.

At the conclusion of this class, you will be able to:

  • List 2-3 principles of engagement and discuss how they can be applied across the translational research spectrum
  • Describe at least three challenges and three advantages of community-engaged research relative to traditional biomedical models of research
  • Compare and contrast community-engaged research with traditional biomedical models of research
  • Craft a plan for integrating community engagement in your research
  • List 2-3 Stanford resources for increased community engagement and research participation

Attendance is open to all research staff.

About the Instructor:

Dr. Lisa Goldman Rosas, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health and the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health at Stanford School of Medicine. An epidemiologist by training, Dr. Goldman Rosas’ research focuses on addressing disparities in chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, depression, and cancer among racial/ethnic minority families. She is passionate about integrating patients, caregivers, community organizations, and other key stakeholders in the research process in order to affect the greatest improvements in health and well-being. As a reflection of this passion, Dr. Goldman Rosas serves as the Faculty Director for the School of Medicine Office of Community Engagement and the Stanford Cancer Institute Community Outreach and Engagement Program.
Dr. Patricia Rodriguez Espinosa, PhD, MPH, is a native of Habana, Cuba, and clinical psychologist by training. She is an Instructor in the Epidemiology and Population Health Department and also serves as the Associate Director of Research for the Office of Community Engagement at Stanford Medicine. Her research concentrates on health equity issues (particularly among Latinxs and immigrant communities), cardiovascular disease prevention, racial residential segregation, well-being across cultures, and the science of Community-Based Participatory Research, citizen science, and other participatory research approaches.
Katherine Connors, MPH, has worked in clinical research at Stanford since 2010 and has a background in public health. She leads the Research Participation team which aims to increase participant engagement in clinical research. In addition to providing recruitment consultations, the team is establishing a Participant Engagement Platform (PEP) consisting of Epic MyChart study invitations, and other honest broker services, including direct email, postal mail, and phone calls. Other resources include a new clinical study directory, the Stanford Research Registry, assistance with cohort exploration, designing recruitment plans, and community engagement. Katherine in passionate about increasing awareness of the importance of clinical research participation and leveraging shared expertise to engage diverse patient populations and communities in research.
