Faculty Event: Self-Compassion and Medicine @ LKSC, Dean’s suite boardroom

Please register. This workshop is open to all Stanford Medicine faculty.

Physicians are driven individuals and have gotten to where they are because of hard work and resilience to harness their talents and skills, which may not always be sustainable over time. In order to find professional fulfillment in Medicine, we must recognize the power of self-compassion and self-valuation.

In this 90-minute session, Drs. Nawal Johansen, Rachel Roberts, Maryam Hamidi and Al’ai Alvarez will lead us through an interactive session on Self-Compassion and Medicine. We will review barriers that exist in developing and promoting self-compassion in medicine, and guide you through some experiential and evidence-based exercises that have been shown to be successful in developing and promoting self-compassion.

*This workshop, presented as part of OFDD’s Cultural Considerations Series, is open to all Stanford School of Medicine faculty.*
Boxed lunch will be provided.

Faculty Event: Making Friends with Stress @ LKSC, Dean’s suite boardroom

Sponsored by Stanford Medicine’s Office of Faculty Development and Diversity. Registration required.

Finally, some good news about stress!

Recent scientific data has found that there are some real benefits to stress. Times of stress can be opportunities for learning, personal growth, happiness, improved performance, and deeper social interactions. Building on the work of Alia Crum, PhD (Stanford Psychology), this workshop will cover the research on the different approaches to stress.

In this 90-minute workshop, instructors, Debbie Belfanz and Dominique Del Chiaro, will discuss the benefits of having a “stress is enhancing” mindset; strategies for appreciating stress and harnessing that energy; and ways to reduce the negative consequences of stress by incorporating creative play into daily life and engaging in mindfulness practices and relaxation techniques. We will illustrate how stress can affect the brain and body differently, depending on our mindset towards it. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the newly learned concepts to real life scenarios.

This workshop is open to all Stanford Medicine faculty. Boxed lunch will be provided.

Debbie Balfanz, PhD, is the Stanford Group Behavior Change Program Manager and provides individual wellness coaching. She has been helping individuals make sustainable lifestyle changes since coming to the Health Improvement Program in 2002. In addition, Deborah is on her own personal journey to learn how to “make friends with stress.”

Dominique Del Chiaro, MEd, is the senior program manager for the Health Improvement Program Healthy Living classes, a seasoned educator, transpersonal life coach and dance and fitness instructor and has facilitated wellness courses for more than 25 years.

A well-recognized intellectual and scientific niche is the first step towards Academic Success. While niche establishment depends on the quality of your research, its recognition is primarily determined by the successful presentation of your findings to the scientific community. Therefore, manuscript writing is a key factor in your academic success. Clear writing is one essential reason that papers are accepted for publication and grants are funded. In this context, communication, defined by the reader’s comprehension of your written message becomes the key to your success. The potential contribution of collaborative science towards your academic success is another significant element in niche development.

Dr. Laure Aurelian, who also leads OFDD’s quarterly K-Award workshop, will discuss different strategies to help you develop your own clear way of data presentation. She will explain reviewers’ and readers’ expectations and the most common misconceptions, provide an overview of the strategies to be used in order to write the best manuscript and discuss a pilot program for one-on-one consultation to provide specific help, as needed.

Key messages:

  • Understand the power of data presentation and how it is appropriate for you
  • What makes a poor writer? Why you might be your own worst enemy
  • How to say more with less: The power of conciseness
  • How to impress your readers with simple, less pompous writing
  • Clear Writing = Clear Thinking = Clear Writing
  • How Significance, Impact, Innovation are vital concepts in manuscript writing
  • Writing your manuscript; required components
  • Detailed examples will show which revisions you should consider
  • Understand how to navigate collaboration in career development

Dr. Laure Aurelian is senior advisor for faculty development at Stanford University and Professor of Pharmacology and Microbiology at the University of Maryland Medical School. Her research interests are focused on virology, immunology and cellular and molecular biology, with emphasis on cancer and neuroscience. She received her first R01 award in 1970 and has since been continuously supported by NIH grants. She is the author of 300 publications in outstanding peer-reviewed journals and numerous review articles and book chapters. She is the inventor on 14 U.S. and foreign patents. She has trained over 50 students and post-doctoral fellows most of whom have achieved independent academic careers. Dr. Aurelian has served on standing study sections that review R01, PO1 and K award applications and is still functioning as a reviewer for NIH grants. At the University of Maryland, she works with investigators in developing grant proposals and programmatic initiatives, and educates faculty in grant and manuscript writing skills.
