ABSTRACT:
After a decade and $40B, the US has a digital infrastructure to capture important data about patient care and more safely deliver care. However, electronic health records (EHRs) also receive blame for causing provider burnout with credible arguments that they were designed, not primarily for patient care, but to facilitate reimbursement and regulatory work. Recent advances in machine learning have generated enormous interest in their applications in healthcare. While imagine recognition and other classification tasks are clearly a success, can AI help solve the most important problems in healthcare today? What is needed to match technological capabilities with actual need?
