Philip J. Held, Ph.D., has a notable record as a builder and nourisher of medical research projects and organizations. Under Dr. Held’s tenure as Principal Investigator, the United States Renal Data System (USRDS) was founded and operated successfully for 9 years. The USRDS (the World’s premier empirical research organization for kidney failure) was/is funded by the NIH which awarded two 5-year projects to Dr. Held’s team in national competitions. Also under Dr. Held’s tenure the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study was designed, launched, and operated for 10 years in 13 countries (DOPPS is an ongoing international longitudinal study of dialysis patients). URREA (University Renal Research and Education Association), founded by Dr. Held, was successfully managed and funded for over 8 years. URREA, is now known as the Arbor Research Collaborative for Health, was built with seed money and direction from Dr. Held. He also directed the effort to win, in a national competition, and then subsequently manage the Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients (SRTR). The SRTR is the sole institution charged with all quantitative research for the recipients of solid organ transplants in the US.

All of these projects were large, critically focused, and internationally recognized as being the best of their kind. Dr. Held has directed and managed many other projects including the Evaluation of the Managed Care Demonstration for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. During his career, Dr. Held has raised over $93 million in funded research and has 114 peer reviewed publications and overall more than 250 publications.

Dr. Held has a BS in physics, and received a Masters and PhD in economics from UC Berkeley. He has taught courses at Berkeley, Princeton, and USC. Dr. Held served as Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health at the University of Michigan Medical School. He was also appointed a Consulting Professor at Stanford in 2013.

Dr. Held was the first non-physician to receive the prestigious Scribner Award from the American Society of Nephrology. Prior to graduate school, Dr. Held served in the US Navy as an aerial navigator, an intelligence officer, and a tactical coordinator on a anti-submarine aircraft.
