BIOGRAPHY

Michael M. Shen, PhD., is Professor of Medicine, Genetics and Development, Urology, and Systems Biology at Columbia University Medical Center. He pursued undergraduate studies at Harvard University and his graduate work at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. After completing post-doctoral research at Harvard Medical School, he joined the faculty at Rutgers–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1994, and rose to the rank of Professor in 2003. He moved to Columbia University Medical Center in 2007, and is currently Co-Leader of the Tumor Biology and Microenvironment Program at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is also dedicated to mentorship and serves as the Director of Graduate Studies for the Genetics and Development Training Program.

Research in Dr. Shen’s laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms of mammalian development and cancer using in vivo analyses of genetically-engineered mouse models, with a focus on the prostate and bladder. He has served on numerous grant review committees, is currently on the editorial boards of Development, Developmental Dynamics, and BioEssays, and is Chair of the 2020 Gordon Research Conference on Epithelial Stem Cells and Niches. He was also awarded the Bladder Cancer Research Innovation Award from the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) in 2018.
