The mission of the Stanford Center for Clinical Research (SCCR) includes offering educational resources, training, and support for investigators and research staff.  We have invited the Clinical Professor of Medicine in Endocrinology, Dr. Marina Basina, MD, and the Associate Professor of Medicine in Endocrinology, Dr. Sun Kim, MD, to provide you with an overview of the evolution in Diabetes Technology and the new era in Obesity Management.

At the conclusion of this class, you will be able to:

  • Characterize epidemiology of type 1 Diabetes and state of DM control
  • Describe risks and benefits of tight glucose control
  • Understand history and evolution of glucose measurement devices
  • Outline history and evolution of insulin delivery devices
  • Explain the benefits of “closed loop” artificial pancreas
  • Outline future of type 1 Diabetes therapy in the era of technology
  • Recognize obesity and how obesity increases risk for insulin resistance and medical complications.
  • Explain indications for weight-loss medications and weight-loss surgery.
  • List 5 medications approved for the chronic treatment of obesity.
  • Explain how glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists work to promote weight loss.
  • Describe 2 surgical options for the treatment of obesity.
  • Describe expected outcomes for medical versus surgical weight loss.

Attendance is open to all research staff.

About the Instructors:

Dr. Marina Basina, MD, is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology Stanford University School of Medicine. She graduated from Moscow Medical School, completed her Medicine Residency at UCLA/West LA VA, and Endocrinology Fellowship at Stanford University. She serves as medical director of inpatient diabetes service, type 1 Diabetes Program, and a co-leader of Enrichment core in Stanford Diabetes Research Center. Dr Basina received numerous teaching awards, master teacher award, and a Stanford Hospital award for excellence in patient care. Her primary interests are in Type 1 Diabetes, Diabetes technology, and Diabetes in pregnancy. She is a co-investigator on several NIH funded clinical trials, NIH Type 1 Diabetes Acute Pancreatitis Consortium, and Type 1 Diabetes Exchange. She is an active member of medical advisory board for type 1 community organizations.

Dr. Sun Kim, MD MS, is the Associate Professor of Medicine at the Stanford University Medical Center. She is a board-certified endocrinologist who specializes in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and obesity. She is particularly devoted to helping individuals change their lifestyles and achieve sustained improvements in their health. Dr. Kim also works closely with the reproductive endocrinology group to help women improve their health, lose weight, and maximize their chances for a successful pregnancy. Dr. Kim also conducts research to better understand risk factors for diabetes and to develop better treatments for diabetes.
