The mission of the Stanford Center for Clinical Research (SCCR) includes offering educational resources, training, and support for investigators and research staff. We have invited SCCR’s Post-Doctoral research Fellow, Dr. Julio Nunes, MD, to provide you with an overview of the most common presentations of psychiatric syndromes that patients may present within the clinical research setting.
At the conclusion of this class, you will be able to:
- Recognize the most common acute mental health syndromes
- Mitigate risks for both participants and staff
- Trace first-aid management of acute emergency situations
- Elaborate ”safety-plans” for the patient to follow at home
- Reflect upon personal biases regarding mental health disorders
Attendance is open to all research staff.
About the Instructors:
Dr. Julio Nunes, MD, is a medical doctor from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and currently a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford Center for Clinical Research. Dr. Nunes is interested in the neuropsychological aspects of psychiatric and general medical diseases. He has experience in primary and emergency medicine, having worked with underserved populations in South America. He is also interested in bioethics, in the particularities of physician-patient relationships, and in the science of effective communication. He speaks 4 languages, and believes that communication and cultural learning are some of the keys to reduce health disparities and increase the quality of medical assistance. Most importantly, Dr. Nunes is an advocate for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion within the healthcare system and clinical trials and is part of the Stanford Leadership in Equity and Advancing Diversity (LEAD) program.
