The Stanford Center for Clinical Research Science Series:
Medical Terminology and Common Medical Acronyms

The mission of the Stanford Center for Clinical Research (SCCR) includes offering educational resources, training, and support for investigators and research staff.  We have invited second year resident in Internal Medicine, Dr. Chris Barrett, to provide you with a solid foundation in medical terminology and common medical acronyms.

  • Understand components of medical terminology
  • Explain common medical terms
  • Recognize the ubiquity of medical acronyms
  • Recognize and apply some of the most common medical acronyms and colloquialisms

Speaker: Chris Barrett, MD
Resident, Internal Medicine

Chris Barrett, MD, obtained his Doctor of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in 2015 and his BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from University of California, Davis is 2007. Chris is currently a second-year resident in the Stanford Internal Medicine Residency Program and is interested in cardiology, applying for a cardiology fellowship in July. Other areas of interest include working with the Stanford Amyloid Center to revamp the tracking system for patients with AL Amyloidosis affecting the heart. He is also examining cardiac outcomes, sonographic changes in heart tissue, and changes in mortality with the advent of new therapies.

Chris is also working with Stanford medical students, preparing third year students for clinical clerkships in designing curriculum, mentoring students and providing lecture and instruction of classroom activities. He also works with fourth year medical students in preparation to begin their internship year, developing simulations for students to mimic common clinical dilemmas. Specific interests include medical literacy and patient communication.
