Workshop: The Drug Development Process: An Overview

Presenter: Edward Rozhon, PhD

Edward Rozhon, PhD, has had a long career in the biopharmaceutical industry as a contributor to the development of drugs to treat viral and autoimmune diseases, as well as several types of cancer. He has worked in both nonclinical and clinical areas of drug development, in the global pharmaceutical and biotech industry, in a contract research organization to support clinical research as well as in academia. He has also taught courses in drug development and virology at UCSC Silicon Valley Extension since 2001. After retiring from Genentech in 2014 as a senior manager of clinical trials for autoimmune, infectious, and ophthalmologic diseases, he became chair of the Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, and Clinical Trials Design programs at UCSC Extension.

The mission of the Stanford Center for Clinical Research (SCCR) includes offering educational resources, training, and support for investigators and research staff.  SCCR has invited Edward Rozhon, PhD, chair of the Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, and Clinical Trials Design programs at UCSC Extension Program, to present an overview of the drug development process.

At the conclusion of this class, you will be able to:

  1. Appreciate the process for bringing a new drug to market, including:
    1. how biopharmaceutical companies make decisions to advance investigational drugs through the non-clinical and clinical stages of drug development,
    2. identify the different phases for the clinical evaluation of investigational drugs in humans, and
    3. understand the regulatory role of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
  2. Obtain a “flavor” of the science and state-of-the-art technology underlying new drug development
  3. Understand the challenges that biopharmaceutical companies face when developing a new drug
